This album is an update to the 2020 release that focuses on a November 2024 rain / snow / wind event in mostly long run time format. In the time since the last release I have worked to reduce the noise floor even further, improved the method of tuning to a "live method", increased the water resistance, and added the H4e recorder.
Again, my expectation is that you are likely someone looking for some cool atmospheric samples to use in your creative efforts.I hope you will find these sounds fit your needs.
In large part the description of the instrument in the previous album applies:
My electric aeolian harp uses 6 strings and stereo humbucking pickups. The only reason for this particular configuration is that using common guitar parts makes this project cheap to build and inexpensive if an idea does not work out. Mine is not the only instrument out there though I do not know of any others electric harps built to deal with the elements except the shed example referenced on the first album description. .
I generally tune the strings to chords by ear using headphones as the wind plays the harp to get the mood I'm going for. New to this album was the introduction of a third bridge between the two pickups which in effect creates two harps panned stereo. Also I have included a single string sample created by muting unused strings.
The nature of the actuation of strings by wind makes the strings the sound harmonics and not the fundamental. And being outside means that there is a natural randomness to the volume and spectrum of the recording. A stronger wind gust brings out higher harmonics and then generally relaxes to a soften drone until the next wave.
At times the action of the wind creates an almost synthesizer filter like sound as the strings are pushed. Also, depending on the mounting used, the wind can "bump" the harp and / or change the string tension by pushing against the curve of the instrument.
Some of the samples presented here were used in this video of Melodyne playing the aeolian harp samples with a live screen recording.
